Sterilization Of Body Jewelry
There are many stories
floating around about how to sterilize your body jewelry, here are the real
answers.
In our catalogs and studio ALL brand new first quality hypoallergenic body
jewelry is cleaned ultrasonically, then sealed in sterilization paper tubing and
sterilized in
a
certified autoclave as soon as it enters our store, for your safety. The
packages can be checked for the sterilization information for proof.
We understand that the jewelry has passed through many hands before it reaches yours (the manufacturers, the people in shipping at the manufacturer, the staff at the shop, not to mention all those people that request to see the jewelry in a shop showcase before choosing that special piece of body jewelry.) Even in our showroom, each piece of body jewelry is displayed in the sealed wrapper, with sterilization information clearly shown on it. It may not make our display cases pretty, but our main concern is for your safety and that your piercings will be the safest we can make them. Our organic and certain gemmed ends that can not be autoclaved are UV Sterilized, and are to be worn in healed piercings only.
Body jewelry sterilization:
Nothing
will sterilize body jewelry except an autoclave, and nothing will kill HIV other
than sterilization in an autoclave. There are no household chemicals, in any
order or combination that can kill HIV or many other dangerous things that could
be on your body jewelry.
If you have gotten jewelry from a non-sterile source such as ebay or a friend
you -must- have it autoclaved before you use it because you don't know who has
used it or what could be on it! You also absolutely must have all jewelry
sterilized before putting it in a new or unhealed piercing!
Please keep in mind that putting chemicals on your jewelry is also a dangerous
thing, as many of the chemicals you could use are poisonous and could harm your
jewelry as well as your piercing or your body.
Consider this- What kind of package was it in when you got it?
That is sometimes a way to tell if your body jewelry has been autoclaved. If it
it in a small bag with paper on one side, and clear or sometimes blue clear on
the other, that is a sterilizer bag. There will be an indicator, and the bag
will say what color the indicator should be if it has been autoclaved. If it is
that color, you can safely use it, because those bags are designed to be
destroyed when opened, so they cannot be reused. If you must have it done again,
you will have to take it to a piercer to have it done. They will probably charge
you sterilization, and you may have to leave it. It takes an hour at the VERY
minimum for the actual sterilization, the drying cycle, and cooling off enough
to be handled. The studio not run a cycle on a very expensive piece of equipment
for one piece of jewelry, so you may have to wait until they have a full load of
equipment and jewelry to sterilize.
If your piercing is healed and you got the jewelry through a reputable source
(such as a safe online site or your piercing studio), you can probably get away
with washing it in antibacterial soap. If you don't know who has touched your
jewelry, or have doubts about it's cleanliness, please take the time to have it
autoclaved.
